Urgent: Close the Gender Gap

Urgent:  Close the Gender Gap

As the world marks International Women's Day Nation Newsplex takes stock of sectors where women have made progress in the struggle for equality in leadership and examines the gaps that remain.

Below are facts on the status of women in leadership in Kenya in different sectors sourced from the National Assembly, World Economic Forum, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, Nairobi Securities Exchange, the Engineers Board of Kenya and Kenya Medical Practitioners, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, World and Dentists Council.

C-suite

Past global studies have found that there is a positive relationship between diversity (age, gender, race, etc.) in company leadership and management, and performance. Despite this revelation, it is lonely in the C-suite for women in Kenya with overall representation in boards and senior executive posts tipped in favour of men.

Only eight of 63 chief executive officers or managing directors of companies listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange are women. An even smaller number, four, chair the board of directors in the firms.

Past global studies have found that there is a positive relationship between diversity (age, gender, race, etc.) in company leadership and management and performance.

Stem

Women are grossly under-represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers despite solid gains in the share of females graduating from university in the fields.

Only one in three doctors is a woman. Female doctors constitute a fifth of specialist doctors, e.g. cardiologists, neurosurgeons and gynaecologists.

There are 167 registered consulting and professional engineers who are women compared to 2,418 men.

Just three per cent of over 800 aircraft maintenance engineers are women.

One in 10 pilots in Kenya is a woman (air transport, commercial private and student).

Judiciary

Women judges are well represented in the magistrates' courts but they are in the minority in the superior courts.

Over half (269 out of 503) of magistrates are women. However, a deeper look at the figures reveal that pendulum swings in the opposite direction among chief and senior magistrates with 43 per cent (58 out of 135) of them being women.

Two out of the seven Supreme Court judges (before former Chief Justice David Maraga retired) were women. There are 12 male and seven female judges in the Court of Appeal while there are 42 male judges compared to 40 female judges in the High Court.

Executive

Kenya has met the two-thirds gender rule at the Cabinet level but falls short at the principal secretary rank.

Seven out of 21 cabinet secretaries are women in conformity with the two-thirds gender rule while just a fifth of principal secretaries are women.

In the counties two out of 46 governors (Nairobi has no governor) are women.

Legislature

On September 21 last year, Chief Justice David Maraga advised President Uhuru Kenyatta to dissolve Parliament because neither of the national legislative houses had enough women lawmakers. The High Court soon after suspended the advisory until a full hearing on the case.

Countries with a greater proportion of women as top decision-makers in legislatures have lower levels of income inequality, according to Women Deliver, an international gender equality advocacy organisation.

Twenty-one out of 67 senators are women, which is just short of the two-thirds gender rule. Only three of the women were elected to the senate while 18 were nominated

One in five members of parliament in Kenya is a woman.

Although the county assemblies meet the gender parity law, mostly through nominations of women, just one of 47 county assembly majority leaders is a woman while just four women are speakers.

Academia

Although the share of women (47 per cent) in wage employment in the education sector is almost the same as that of men (53 per cent), they are under-represented in the top ranks of university leadership.

Nine out of 73 public and private universities and university constituent colleges vice chancellors and principals are women.

About 287 female academic university staff were professors or associate professors compared to 1,313 males in 2018. At the same time one in three universities academic staff with a PhD in Kenya is a woman.

Gender gap

Last year Kenya ranked 109 out of 153 countries in in the Global Gender Gap index 2020. The country has almost closed 67 per cent of its overall gender gap.

From Broke to wealthy

From Broke to wealthy

Broke means,  if you lost your primary

source of income today, you wouldn't be

able to maintain the lifestyle you have

become accustomed to because you have no

assets to rely on.                                                                                                                                    Active income is the income you get from

services rendered, it is usually your income

from your job or business.

Passive income in simple terms is money

that you make while you are sleeping. It is

the income you get regularly from

investments you've already made.

Financial Freedom: When passive income exceeds your expenses.

Wealthy is about how much of your income you are able to keep and convert into assets that can provide you with an income in the future.

wealthy is not how much we earn but how we can systematically use a proportion of the income we earn to build assets that pay us over time

Which woman do i marry ? wife material

MY FATHER'S ADVICE TO ME WHEN I WAS SEARCHING FOR A WIFE

By Jerry John Rawlings (Former Ghana President)
My son, I will be very raw and sincere with you.
Do not worry about the size of a woman buttock or breast but worry about the size of her heart and brain. Worry about the size of her love and endurance. Because after 5 or 10 years, it will not be about the breast or buttock.
As you can see, your mum now has a flat chest and almost flat buttock but we still live together happily, I still love her and she still love me.
Be careful of a woman that loves money. I mean the woman that talks ‘every time’ about her hair, cloths, shoes, bags panties and make-ups. Marriage is not all about these things. Without make-up, cloths, shoes and panties a good marriage will still stand but without love, no marriage can stand.
When I got married to your mum, I didn’t have a car or house of my own. I was not even
educated. But I had dreams and she appreciate and support me. Any woman that does not support your dream is not worth thinking-a- minute about. There are women that will see your dreams better than you, you are lucky if you find one.
My son, open your ears very well, there is a kind of woman you should avoid, do not make a mistake to marry this kind of woman or you will regret it. I mean a woman that always has bad things to say about everyone. If you see this kind of woman, run away.
One of the worst kind of woman you can marry is the one that complains about everything. If you buy this, she says you should have bought that, if you do this, she said you should have done that. Please stay away!
Most women enjoy talking but the one who talks for two hours and listen for two minutes is a potential ‘bomb’. Be wise
Be very careful of a pretending partner. A
pretending woman is not hard to know. She will always know everything about everything, she will be careful. Just close your eyes and open your heart and you will see!
No woman is perfect. If you see a woman who
believes in your dream , who respects you who is committed and who is not all about herself alone then don’t let her go.
But remember, you must not be a wayward man. I have trained you!
If you find a good woman but you are a bad man, you wont have a good marriage!
I won’t pick a wife for you but I have given you
my advice. When you find her, bring her for my
blessings.
May you find a woman that will increase you not decrease you..

HOW TO BUILD A MARRIAGE : ACTION PLAN

HOW TO BUILD A MARRIAGE ALONE: ACTION PLAN

By Victor Salamba
It is easy to build or repair a marriage when your partner cooperates, but more often than not, people have the burden of building their marriages without the Spouse cooperating.
Last week I highlighted the key questions you should answer if you would like to embark on building your marriage alone, today I highlight the action plan. Remember, there is no high success rate with this, but it is worth the try:
1. Try Something New: This will break boredom. Most marriages die because of a boring routine. To fight for your marriage alone, always be willing to be courageous to try something new. Sleep out together, go for a holiday, go dancing, read a book, introduce movie night, just do something new. Break the routine.
2. Choose To Be Happy: Being grumpy does not help your cause as you try to fight for your marriage. Joy is contagious. Don’t be drawn into a sad gloomy cycle. Choose to be happy. People tend to want to spend time with people who are jolly, and always tend to avoid grumpy people. Choose to be happy.
3. Do Not Be Needy & Too Clingy: Simply said, do not suffocate your Partner with your presence. Focus on short quality moments and short meaningful words. Do not demand to spend time with them, but make every moment they spend with you memorable that day, as you long for the next time.
4. Master The Art of Words: Nothing Pieces the heart better than well-spoken, well-timed and well-toned words. Master the words that would get your Partner’s attention. This has to be done to precision, because if done the wrong way, they will not have an impact, and your Partner will know you don’t mean it. Mastering words is an act that involves saying what is relevant to the situation that your Partner will connect with you.
5. Don’t Blame Your Partner for the Misery or Bad Marriage: Blaming will push them away. Blaming yourself will make them manipulate you. Get the balance right. Address the real issue and do not allocate blame.
6. Don’t Get People To Side With You: This means your children, parents, friends, counsellors and clergy. Do not build a team to prove how bad your Spouse is. This will create irreparable wounds.
7. Learn To Let Some Things Go: To fight for a marriage alone, you must know how to let some things go and not nit-pick everything. Not all things need a family meeting. Learn to be agreeable.
It is not easy to repair or build a marriage alone, but like all journeys, it is worth the try.

THE 22 ABILITIES OF A HUSBAND

THE 22 ABILITIES OF A HUSBAND

A husband should have the ability to...
1. LISTEN
He should be concerned about her thoughts and stories. A woman wants a husband she can open up to. An emotional companion
2. KEEP QUIET
He should know when to hold back his tongue to prevent things from escalating especially when she is moody
3. COMMUNICATE
He should learn the art of communication; face to face and over the phone. Learn to check up on her, to engage, to chat her up and keep loneliness away
4. GIVE DIRECTION
He should learn to give direction. Where are they going as a couple and family? He should offer confidence, vision and leadership
5. STAY FAITHFUL
He should show commitment to the vision of their love through faithfulness. Leading from the front publicly and privately. Keeping off other women
6. PURSUE
He should date his wife no matter how long they have been together. Make her feel special, compliment her, flirt with her, pursue her, romance her, excite her heart, treat her like a Queen
7. BOOST SELF ESTEEM
He should make her believe in herself more, drowning her doubts, allaying her fears, reminding her who she is when she forgets, lifting up her spirits when she feels low, making her feel sexy and beautiful when she does not feel all that
8. PRAY
He should cover his wife and children in prayer, a prayer warrior in the spiritual realm, committing his family to his maker, putting on the full armour and going to war, accessing the spiritual blessings meant for his family
9. COMFORT
He should be a shoulder to lean on when she cries, the person she runs to when this world overwhelms her. Her cover
10. SEXUALLY AROUSE
He should make her feel desired and wanted. Turn her on like crazy. Open her tap of wetness. Know which buttons to push to give her sweet highs
11. PROVIDE
Whether she earns more than him or not, he should play his part in meeting the needs of the family and seek ways to get more provisions and investments
12. ENCOURAGE
He should be her voice of reason. The firm voice that counters her negative voices or the storms that shake her. He should be that man who tells her "I believe in you honey. You can do this"
13. GIVE PEACE
He should be a peace maker, knowing how to calm tense moments and avoid drama
14. CREATE HUMOUR
He should know how to be her clown, how to mine for laughs out of her, how to make her smile, how to make her remember him when he is far from her and find herself smiling all by herself
15. PROTECT
This world can be tough for a woman; his mother, his sister, his friends, her friends, her boss, strangers might attack her. He should have the ability to keep her safe and make her feel she has an ally
16. SERVE
He should put his ego aside and attend to his wife and family even without being asked, anticipating their needs, being there hero. To lead is to serve
17. DEFEND HER FROM HIMSELF
A man can become his wife's worst enemy, the pain he can cause her if he chooses to harm her physically, emotionally, sexually or financially is too great. He should make sure he doesn't be her worst mistake
18. INSPIRE
His words carry so much weight. Words of appreciation and encouragement are enough to keep her going, he should keep refueling and recharging her
19. HELP AND SUPPORT
He should care about her dreams and life goals and be her purpose partner, helping her be the best version of herself. He should ease her load and help out at home. They are a team
20. GIVE STABILITY AND SECURITY
He should make sure that he is consistent, being her constant, a steady hand. When a woman is given clarity, she lets down her guard and releases her love
21. TOUCH
He should understand how sensitive a woman's skin is and how it loves to be touched. He should learn the non verbal communication of touch, how to rub her back, hold her waist, stroke her skin and cuddle up with her
22. ABILITY TO NEED HIS WIFE
He should also have the ability to be vulnerable, to need his wife, to allow her to do the above things to him, to be there for him, to trust her with his issues and to give her room to love him. Women love being of value
