2 Timothy 1:7
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
Loose Cables
A
new missionary was assigned a car that would not start without a push.
After pondering his problem, the missionary devised a plan. He went to
the school near his home, got permission to take some children out of
class, and had them push his car off. As he made his rounds, he would either park on a hill or leave the engine running. He used this ingenious procedure for two years.
Poor health forced the missionary and his family to leave and a new missionary came in to replace him. While being shown the arrangement for getting the car started; the new man began looking under the hood.
Before the explanation was complete, the new missionary interrupted, “Why, I believe the only trouble is this loose cable.” He gave the cable a twist, stepped into the car, pushed the switch, and to the leaving missionary’s astonishment, the engine roared to life.
For two years needless trouble had become routine. The power was there all the time. Only a loose connection kept him from putting that power to work.
The bible tells us that God has given us a spirit of power, it’s ours but many people have no idea how to activate that power. Just like the missionary in our story you may be going through inconveniences in your life and probably you have come to the place where you have accepted it as the norm simply because you do not know how to activate the power at your disposal. Or you do not have the faith that that power is there for you in the first place.
2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
In our story the second missionary was able to activate the power in the car because he had knowledge on how the car operated and he put it into action.
In the same way we are able to activate his power through our knowledge of Him. You will not access His power through my knowledge of Him or through your pastor’s knowledge of Him. It is through YOUR knowledge of Him.
To know Him you have to stick with the basics. You have to pray, you have to study the word, you have to worship, you have to get closer to Him daily.
Like the first missionary, are you always needing a push, always needing someone to pray for you because you always don’t have the power to pray for yourself?
Do you always need someone to push you with an encouraging word? Do you always need to place yourself strategically around certain individuals because you need them to boost you and push you in a certain direction?
There is power available that God has freely given us. Power to set you free from addictions, power to heal you, power for everything you need for life and godliness.
Like our missionary you don’t need to pack on a hill and neither do you always need a push, just learn how to tap into the power instead of fear, ensure your cables are always properly connected.
Reflection
Knowing God more gives us greater access to His power, to know Him we have to spend time with Him!
