Family of love
Sunday 29/12/2013
Readings : Sirach 3:2-6,12-14 Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 Colossians 3:12-21
Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23
Underlying the wisdom offered in the Christmas period is the mystery
of the family in God’s divine plan. At the beginning of the world, God
established the family in the “marriage” of Adam and Eve, the two
becoming one body (Genesis 2:22-24). Now in the new creation, Christ
is made “one body” with His bride, the Church, as today’s Epistle
indicates (see Ephesians 5:21-32).By this union we are made God’s
chosen ones, holy and beloved. And our families are to radiate the
perfect love that binds us to Christ in the Church.
“Wives, be subject to your husbands, as you should in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be sharp with them.” (Colossians
3:19) clearly stipulates the relationship of wife and husband. On the
other hand, children born out of families have responsibilities, “Long
life comes to anyone who honours a father, whoever obeys the Lord
makes a mother happy.” While parents are expected to treat their
children with affection. “Parents, do not irritate your children or
they will lose heart.”(Colossians 3:21).
We are called upon to renew our commitment to our God-given duties as
spouses, children and parents and perform these duties with love. As
the chosen of God, then, the holy people whom he loves, you are to be
clothed in heartfelt compassion, in generosity and humility,
gentleness and patience.” Bear with one another; forgive each other if
one of you has a complaint against another. The Lord has forgiven you;
now you must do the same. Over all these clothes, put on love, the
perfect bond. And may the peace of Christ reign in your hearts;
because it is for this that you were called together in one body.”
