What do you want?
Jesus
asks blind Bartimaeus a very interesting question. I find it
interesting because of the scenario before him. Here you have a blind
man, Bartimaeus asking for help. The most logical thing you would think of is that since he is blind then he wants to be healed right? Wrong? That’s making an assumption. Jesus never made the assumption; he asks the man to clearly articulate what he wants Jesus to do for him.
Bartimaeus knew what he wanted and he clearly voiced it to Jesus, he wanted to see and because of his faith, he received sight. One very important lesson we can learn here is the importance of knowing what you want. If you have no idea what you want, then how will you know it when you see it?
Many of us miss out on the opportunities in life because we are not clear on what we want. We settle for anything. Sometimes we settle for what is available not because we have no idea what we want but simply because it can get us going or act as a vessel to get us to where we want to go.
Bartimaeus knew one thing and that is he wanted to see. If he had sight then his whole life would be turned around and he would not have to depend on others begging by the road side.
He had the faith that Jesus was able to make that a possibility in his life so when he heard that Jesus was passing by, he recognized an opportunity that no one else saw.
Do you know what you want? I wondered today if Jesus was to ask the same question, how many of us would be able to clearly articulate what we want?
Mark 10:49-52
(49) Jesus stopped and said, “Call him over!” They called out to the blind man and said, “Don’t be afraid! Come on! He is calling for you.” (50) The man threw off his coat as he jumped up and ran to Jesus. (51) Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man answered, “Master, I want to see!” (52) Jesus told him, “You may go. Your eyes are healed because of your faith.” Right away the man could see, and he went down the road with Jesus.
