BEST SLEEPING HABITS FOR MARRIED COUPLES

BEST SLEEPING HABITS FOR MARRIED COUPLES:

1. Wear something easy to remove, comfortable and sexy. Make the work of your partner easy to peel off your clothes to reveal the naked you. Yummy lingerie, loose boxer. Sleep naked for best results

2. Brush your teeth to encourage kissing

3. Don't carry work to bed

4. Minimize the use of phones or laptops. Your partner needs attention, the bedroom is sacred

5. Move the baby to a separate room (if your finances allow you to and you have a home of more than one bedroom) when the baby is of age. The child might have been conceived in the bedroom but is not meant to live in your bedroom that is an exclusive island for two

6. Gentleman have that one spot besides her lips you kiss each night; whether it's her forehead, fingers, shoulders, back or butt. Lady, stroke him with your gentle touch, your fingers speaking love

7. Make a habit of praising each other's body, it makes you both comfortable and relax. Talk those bedroom matters

8. Pray together before you sleep, and when you wake up

9. Apologize and forgive if any wrong was done during the day. Don't sleep with a grudge or anger

10. Read your partner's body language. If you or your partner desires to make love, then rise to the occasion or wet up to the occasion; whether night or morning glory

11. Have pillow talks, open your heart and lips and talk intimate stuff. Say how you feel; are you troubled, grateful, broken?

12. Cuddle up when you feel sleep is fast approaching, drown into sleep as your bodies intertwine

13. Tell each other how much you mean to each other. Your partner never gets enough of your affirmation

14. Incase one of you farts, laugh about it (some farts are unstoppable)

15. Cover your partner incase you wake up in the middle of the night and find your partner outside the duvet/ blanket

16. Kiss your partner when you come back from peeing in the middle of the night

17. Hold your partner close and pray when your partner wakes up terrified by a nightmare

18. Give a goodnight and goodmorning kiss

19. Spend some few minutes of love in bed even when the alarm wakes you up

Trojan Horse

 BEWARE OF THE TROJAN HORSE!

Ever had of the saying, “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts?”

It was the tenth year and the war against the Greeks by the Trojans who lived in Troy, was still raging on. In that year, Odysseus deviced a way of ending the war once and for all.

Troy was fortified, and it had to take a great scheme to pull down it’s walls and destroy it’s fighters. So the Greeks, led by Odysseus, built a dummy gigantic wooden horse and left it on its wheels outside the gates of the city of Troy.

He wanted to deceive the Trojans and make them believe that the Greeks had lost their nerves, surrendered, and had returned back to Greece. When dawn broke, the Trojans were surprised that they were not surrounded by the Greek army, only a wooden horse.

They indeed believed that the Greeks had gone and had left this horse as a gift to their gods.

They wheeled the wooden horse into their city and started revelry to celebrate the end of the war. However, unknown to the Trojans, the horse was hollow, and it hid few Greek warriors, Odysseus included.

The horse was in the gates, the City of Troy was already compromised. Now that they were inside, Odysseus and his men went out of the dummy horse and annihilated the unsuspecting guards.

Then they opened the city gates and allowed the entire Greek army, who were hiding some miles away, to enter the city. The Trojans were taken by surprise.

They were unprepared for war. They were unarmed, unaware, totally caught off guard. Their army was destroyed, the City was taken captive and all the Trojans were slain.

Beware of the Trojan Horse.

The Trojan horse was the downfall of the City of Troy.

Beware of the “gifts” the enemy carries. They are not gifts, but Kryptonites, ready to detonate you as soon as you let your guards down.

See, no one is immune to SEXUAL immorality, no one. The Bible says, take heed, let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. [1 Corinthians 10:12]

We wage war everyday against our flesh and it’s not easy. You may think you are fortified, but just like Odysseus to the Trojans, the devil has schemes and plans, read to blow up the temple of the Holy Spirit- You!

He’s cunning and sin is deceitful. For one man, it has an arrow, for another, a dart, and for another a spear. Do not underestimate the devil, but do not overestimate him too _he’s already defeated.

That said, we shouldn’t be too casual to think that we are immune. The Bible says that we should stand firm, putting on the full armour of the Lord. Stand firm, gird your loins, be strong and vigilant. Be of good courage.

Listen, the Bible say in 1st Corinthians 10:13, that there’s no, temptation regardless of its source, that has overtaken or enticed us, that is not common to human experience, nor is any temptation unusual or beyond human resistance.

God is faithful, to His word—He is compassionate and trustworthy, and He will not let us be tempted beyond our ability to resist. Along with the temptation He has in the past and now, provides the WAY OUT as well, so that we will be able to endure it without yielding, and will overcome temptation with joy.

What is the Trojan Horse you are wheeling into your life? What is the Trojan Horse you are allowing into your bulwark?

The gift is not real!

There’s a WAY OUT that the Lord has provided in the mess around you! There’s a WAY OUT, of what the devil cheaply pawns as “good and satisfying.”

Way out, cut that conversation down.

Way out, cut that relationship, however hard, let it go. Way out, uproot the little seedlings of pornography, by literally walking away from that laptop or TV.

Way out, unplug from social media till you reset back. Way out, change what you watch or listen to or read.

The battle of sexual purity, not only needs prayers, but a physical engagement with your self.

Way out, be accountable to someone who will not sooth you into sinning, nor stifle your growth.

Way out, learn the discipline of saying NO!

Way out, go for deliverance from soul ties and past relationships that you could be still dragging over in your heart.

God knows that all the SEX around hasn’t helped us to become better drivers or conversationalists. Our deepest needs remain untouched, and by far, unknown. Emojis have become a way of life. Winky face. Laughing until I am crying.

What I am saying? Am shouting this loud. The WORD OF THE LORD is Life. The Bible says that He has given us everything, to be able to live a godly life. Life or death, the choice is ours. Choose life. Choose to live out loud for Christ. Choose to live radically, countercultural for Christ.

Beware of the Trojan Horses around! Do not pull them in!

Star of Gods Love

And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul.”

1 Samuel 27:1

The thought of David’s heart at this time was a false thought, because he certainly had no ground for thinking that God’s anointing him by Samuel was intended to be left as an empty unmeaning act. On no one occasion had the Lord deserted his servant; he had been placed in perilous positions very often, but not one instance had occurred in which divine interposition had not delivered him. The trials to which he had been exposed had been varied; they had not assumed one form only, but many—yet in every case he who sent the trial had also graciously ordained a way of escape. David could not put his finger upon any entry in his diary, and say of it, “Here is evidence that the Lord will forsake me,” for the entire tenor of his past life proved the very reverse. He should have argued from what God had done for him, that God would be his defender still. But is it not just in the same way that we doubt God’s help? Is it not mistrust without a cause? Have we ever had the shadow of a reason to doubt our Father’s goodness? Have not his lovingkindnesses been marvellous? Has he once failed to justify our trust? Ah, no! our God has not left us at any time. We have had dark nights, but the star of love has shone forth amid the blackness; we have been in stern conflicts, but over our head he has held aloft the shield of our defence. We have gone through many trials, but never to our detriment, always to our advantage; and the conclusion from our past experience is, that he who has been with us in six troubles, will not forsake us in the seventh. What we have known of our faithful God, proves that he will keep us to the end. Let us not, then, reason contrary to evidence. How can we ever be so ungenerous as to doubt our God? Lord, throw down the Jezebel of our unbelief, and let the dogs devour it.

Choose Hope

 Praise God.

Hebrews 6:19

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.

Hope in Desperation.

In times of desperation,we have two choices.we crumble and lose sight of all hope, which, in itself, is a devastating choice. Or,we can choose faith in God like Shadrach, Meshach and Abed'nego in Daniel 3:16-18...It doesn't matter how desperate our situation is,we can still choose to believe that God has our best interests at heart.

Walking by faith is a choice.its not always the easiest choice though. It May mean leaving your comfort zone, but it always gives God the Opportunity to strengthen you.

No matter what you come up against, it is hope that feeds your faith.

Let us make the choice to put our hope in God.

Have a Blessed Day.

Power of Politics

*ELEVEN PRINCIPLES YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND ABOUT POLITICS BEFORE YOU STRESS YOURSELF:*

1. Nobody has your interests.

2. Everybody is chasing their own interests.

3. Dealing with politicians is like sleeping with tigers; you must always have your eyes wide open.

4. In any Political equation, there’s always someone being used. If you can’t find one then it is you.

5. Serving Politicians is like being a bandage on a wound. Once the wound is healed your usefulness ends. Politicians don’t recognize and reward value they recognize their own needs and you are only as useful as the lifespan of their need for you.

6. In Politics never mourn or wail more than the bereaved. They will get the reward while you inherit their enemies.

7. In Politics, in any event that other interests conflict with your own interests and you have to choose, always choose yours.

8. Never cross oceans for Politicians; you will drown and the best they will do is give a benevolent speech at your burial, lie to your widow and children and eat your food. Politicians will never cross the streets for their foot soldiers.

9. Don’t kill yourself for their ambition or put your life at risk for any politician.

10. Above all, Family and Health are things you should never use to attack a man. Politics is never that serious.

11. Lastly to all the Youths, it’s too risky to sacrifice your Career, Health, Personal Character, Social capital, and integrity in pursuit of short term and temporary rewards, offered by Politicians.

Now you know. Let's love one another and put aside emotions and feelings. I can tell you what you are shouting about today at the top of your voice,a few years to come will not make sense and you will see that you really wasted your energy and time.

15.and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.

Thankfulness.

What can you thank God for right now?

From the gift of life, breath in my lungs to the loof over my head and to every mercy I receive today. The attention you pay to me every day, in every circumstance ,I thank you Lord.

Count your blessings name it one by one and give thanks to God.He wants us to show our devotion to Him by faithfully keeping the  promises we make.what vow and promise did you make when you asked God to help, guide and to intervene in your life? Have you fulfilled? God is waiting for you to fulfill and He is Promising he will deliver you from Trouble and show His salvation (50:15,23).

Be faithful in fulfilling your Promise to God today.

Rest: God is in control

Known to the unknown

Moving forward.

Acts 12:7‭-‬8 NKJV

Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands. Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.”

Herod is out on a rampage to persecute the believers. He has just put to death James the brother of John with the sword and now he has put Peter in chains in prison under heavy guard.

But the bible says that constant prayer was being offered to God by the believers for Peter.

Sometimes in life we feel like we are in prison and we are chained. It feels like everything we desire to do is met with opposition and we just can't seem to move forward. What then do you do?

I love the fact that though Peter was chained between two soldiers and with another soldier standing guard at the door, he still had the peace to sleep. Reminds me of Jesus sleeping in a boat in the midst of a storm. In the times when it feels like you are stuck and can't move forward, do not panic or worry, instead find the peace of God and rest in it.

It is only when you rest in his peace that you will be able to move from the known into the unknown just like Peter did. In fact Peter was so at peace and in heavy sleep that the angel sent to rescue him had to strike him on the side to wake him up. Peter was actually broken out of prison by an angel, now that's the unknown, that's different, that's the impossible made possible by putting faith in God.

It was such an impossibility that when he went to the believers who were at that time in prayer for him, they did not believe that he was the one at the door.

This one thing I know, sometimes God will allow us to get stuck so that he can come through to show himself strong on our behalf. As he takes us through that journey, we must be willing to let go of what we know in order to trust him withe what we do not know.

Reflective Thoughts.

When you seem to be stuck, do you let worry control you or ate you confident to rest in the peace of God because you know he has got you covered?

----------------------------------------------------------------

What is the known the comfort zone that you ate afraid to let go of?

----------------------------------------------------------------

Why are you afraid to let go, is it that you don't truly trust God or you don't believe that he is able?

When God seems silent

 When God seems silent

Esther 4:16 NKJV

16 “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in [a]Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”

We have all been there, in situations where it seems like God is silent and sometimes we even think he has forsaken us. It seems like everything around us is getting from bad to worse and God is not interested to do anything about it, at least that how we seem to see the situation. We get to a place where we are so discouraged that we don’t even want to pray, we simply want to just give up.

Think of Esther in captivity, having gone through a lot she is now finally the queen and no sooner than it seems like there is a light at the end of the tunnel, a darker cloud seems to be cast over her and her people because now they are facing the possibility of total annihilation. It is at this point that Esther calls for a three day fast.

One of the things that fasting does is that it brings clarity. Fasting helps us disconnect from all manner of distractions and as we deny the flesh then we give the spirit an opportunity to get clarity. Fasting does not arm twist God into doing what we want; rather it helps us to gain some clarity and understanding of where God is leading or what he is saying.

At times we think that God is silent but in reality we are just distracted because of so many things that are clamouring for our attention and when we take some time off to focus on prayer as we deny the flesh then we are able to tune in to the heavenly frequency again to hear what God is saying to us. Fasting and prayer helps us demonstrate a hunger for God and it helps us get to that place where we can spend quality time with God to really express what we are going through.

Through prayer and fasting, God was able to give Queen Esther wisdom that saved the lives of her people. Though they were in captivity, God was not silent after all.

Are you in a season where God seems silent? Maybe you have a poor connection, try enhancing it through prayer and fasting, see if you get a better reception.

Reflective Thoughts

Does God seem silent or have you ever gone through a season where it felt that way? How did you feel as you went through that season?

How did you handle the situation / season and what are some of the major lessons you learned?

God promised to never leave us nor forsake us; do you actually believe that He meant what He said?

who is our life ?

 “Christ, who is our life.”

Colossians 3:4

Paul’s marvellously rich expression indicates, that Christ is the source of our life. “You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins.” That same voice which brought Lazarus out of the tomb raised us to newness of life. He is now the substance of our spiritual life. It is by his life that we live; he is in us, the hope of glory, the spring of our actions, the central thought which moves every other thought. Christ is the sustenance of our life. What can the Christian feed upon but Jesus’ flesh and blood? “This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.” O wayworn pilgrims in this wilderness of sin, you never get a morsel to satisfy the hunger of your spirits, except ye find it in him! Christ is the solace of our life. All our true joys come from him; and in times of trouble, his presence is our consolation. There is nothing worth living for but him; and his lovingkindness is better than life! Christ is the object of our life. As speeds the ship towards the port, so hastes the believer towards the haven of his Saviour’s bosom. As flies the arrow to its goal, so flies the Christian towards the perfecting of his fellowship with Christ Jesus. As the soldier fights for his captain, and is crowned in his captain’s victory, so the believer contends for Christ, and gets his triumph out of the triumphs of his Master. “For him to live is Christ.” Christ is the exemplar of our life. Where there is the same life within, there will, there must be, to a great extent, the same developments without; and if we live in near fellowship with the Lord Jesus we shall grow like him. We shall set him before us as our Divine copy, and we shall seek to tread in his footsteps, until he shall become the crown of our life in glory. Oh! how safe, how honoured, how happy is the Christian, since Christ is our life!

Stop Discouraging your Spouse from Loving You

Your spouse stopped making love to you because each time your spouse touched you or made sexual advances at you, you pulled away or made excuses.

Your spouse stopped praying with you because each time your spouse requested you to pray together or asked "Is there anything you like me to pray for?", you brushed it off.

Your spouse stopped asking you out for dates or making plans for just you two because each time your spouse did so, you claimed to be busy.

Your spouse stopped telling you "I love you" because your spouse realized they were the only one saying it.

Your spouse stopped dressing sexy for you in bed because when your spouse did so, you rarely noticed.

Your spouse stopped sending you photos and videos of themselves to share with you the events of the day because when you received the photos and videos, you didn't bother to appreciate.

Your spouse stopped cooking your favourite meal because when your spouse did so, you didn't even see it as special or you came home late already full.

Your spouse stopped chatting with you or calling you up because you kept blueticking your spouse, ignoring the messages and calls, replying with cold and short messages or assuming your spouse.

Your spouse stopped opening up to you and talking heart to heart because when your spouse did so, you looked disinterested or you used the sharing against your spouse.

Your spouse stopped waiting for you in bed before sleeping because you seemed to not care about joining your spouse in bed or you kept finding reasons to go to bed late.

Your spouse stopped telling you goals and dreams because when your spouse did so, you wrote your spouse off and belittled his/her desires.

Your spouse stopped wanting to go to the public with you because you showed clearly you don't want to be seen with the one you are married to.

Stop discouraging your spouse from loving you. Be careful you don't discourage your spouse to the point of no return

Kenyan Wealth Dream

#FlipSidePost

If it's too long, it definitely isn't for you.

The house below is a luxurious house in Nairobi The owner isn't a politician. Just a hard-working individual.

There exists something known as The Kenyan Dream. Many live it. Many dream it. And all it takes to activate it is to have a total mind shift on what you think you know.

Question. Have you ever asked yourself why, with all the money they have, rich people in Kenya never relocate? I mean, Kirubi could easily own a chatteau in France or a villa in Monte Carlo right? Why do wealthy foreigners think Kenya is amazing and want to live here? I mean schools like Turi or RVA host children of Africa's wealthy presidents, businessmen and diplomats. What Kenya is this they see that many of us don't?

Well, it's because, once you tune into a certain frequency of life, all your antennae and transmitters receive are the energies of that frequency. In other words, we are, what we attract.

Reality, is relative. What you think is true doesn't mean it's universally true. What you think is impossible is possible to someone else.

Change your frequencies. Start by changing your social circles, the things you read online and the energy you are attracted to.
The human mind is very interesting. It always finds a way to make excuse for itself when defeated.

We have a very low threshold of inspiration. For instance;

Peter Munga, the founder of Equity Bank is worth $170M.

Manu Chandaria is worth $280M.

Christian Ronaldo, a young footballer has just surpassed the $1B mark.

A musician known as Kanye West is in the ranges of $1B dollars.

A basketballer called Michael Jordan is worth $2.5B.

For objectivity sakes, let's not value politicians for now.

We love to apply our inequities and failures on others' lives and we tend to believe that whatever is impossible to us, must be impossible to others.

Examples;

When one sees a girl they used to know, who disappears and returns with some money, good looks and new possessions, the first thing they will say is that she must have found a sponsor or is a prostitute. To them, there's absolutely no way she could have worked hard on her own.

When they see a young man who was once poor and has succeeded, beyond their expectations, they'd rather assume it's because the young man is into drugs, or this other sorry excuse lazy people call 'illuminati'.

If they saw a middle aged man or someone they had thought was washed up who suddenly makes money, the best explanation will always be "ameiba pesa za tender" or that he is corrupt.

This is because, we project our own inefficiencies to others. Not here. I will show you the other side of things and speak the unspoken.

There's a picture I had posted earlier and captioned it this: Don't be salty. Live the Kenyan dream.

As usual, as with such pictures especially when anything opulent is associated with a politician, many uninformed people go on to spew uninformed commentaries on the same and would easily attribute it to ' Stolen Wealth '.

Be as it may, who told you that owning a chopper is a big deal? there are many unknown Kenyans who have worked hard and own such things. After all, man was created to conquer adversity, not to wallow in it.

I recently wrote that we need to adapt differently and change how we do things to survive post covid economic doldrums. Before we even embark on that self help journey, we must first proudly bring out the possibilities that lie in us. We must testify and evangelize about the Kenyan dream.

7 years ago, I went to see a politician in his office in regards to some digital work for his personal businesses he was offering me. He wasn't a top notch politician, however, what I realised was that he had amassed so much wealth over time. As usual, just like most of you, I quickly concluded that he had made his money from corrupt deals and having his hands in the public coffers.

As the work commenced, he introduced me to his wife who was running their businesses and we toured his facilities accross the country. The more I engaged with them, the more I had a total mind shift on what I thought I knew.

You see, he was an exporter of very expensive office furniture he made in some nondescript location. He had large commercial tree farms and this raked him hundreds of millions every turn. I soon realised that he was a smart politician. He had used his political office to traverse the country and learn it. He explored potential that many didn't even factor and executed his business diligently. To him, politics had been just a stepping stone to access information.

That was my aha moment. To many, including some of you, politics is an end unto itself while to smart ones, proximity to political power means access to information and exposure. If you have a business mind, you take advantage of this.

How many of you know what opportunities your neighbouring counties have? Have you, a Luo from Siaya, explored opportunities in Kwale that Kwale people don't appreciate? Have you, a Kamba from Makueni bothered to know what business you can do in Kisii? Have you, a kalenjin farmer known what you can do in Isiolo? I bet you don't even think of it that way. I see water hyacinth in Kisumu and I see a multibillion enterprise in furniture, bags, apparel and accessories with ready markets globally. Someone else sees a nuisance of a weed slowing down fishing prospects while meanwhile Chinese fish is thriving in Kenya. Adapt.

We can fix Kenya by fixing our individual aspirations.

Young people have what it takes to make it. There's a young man, and he's a friend both offline and here on FB who bought a new Discovery 4 less than 2 years ago out of nothing else but, blogging. He was 26. Yes, these many words we write can transform lives financially if you know what to do with them.

There's also my other associate( some of you who know me personally know who I'm taking about) who built an IT system for a foreign government and bought his Range Rover Autobiography Supercharged 5L cash, from RMA. 30M. Not on bank loans. He was 34. And of course they have many other investments. No corruption. No godfathers. No illuminati . Adaptability.

I grew up in a commercial farming area called Kericho. Many years ago, an old man called Isiah worked for an Asian businessman as a loader in his wholesalers. He later left to start his own indigenous wholesalers and ate into the market share of this Asian businessman. In few years, the old man had spread his wings far and wide. When he was about to retire, he gave his sons the reigns of the business and the sons diversified into commercial haulage. Transport. Their immediate prospects were the large tea farms. The trucks would transport tea to mombasa auction and return with other items for traders in western Kenya. In less than 10 years, the sons had grown the fleet of long haul trucks to more than 150. As they were busy running wholesalers and trucking, some of their peers had migrated to Nairobi to "seek greener pastures". One of the sons once said " I've been to Nairobi and I can't handle all that drama. The only time I'll live in nairobi is when I have a Billion in my bank ". It sounded like a funny joke. But few years later, they got lucrative transport business contracts and as they say, the rest is history. He made his Billion, moved to the most affluent areas of Karen, bought a house in Spain and Australia and lives his Kenyan dream.

There's a gentleman who was once my parents' tenant in Kericho. A very hardworking young kikuyu called Jimmy. This gentleman started as a hawker before we let him space to run his clothing business. He grew his business in strides and as we speak, drives a Porsche Cayenne, has a block of apartments etc. He knew that he couldn't compete in crowded cities...he needed to find a niche and be consistent. No godfathers, no corruption. Adaptability.

Did you know that the owners (major shareholders) of Braeburn Schools are from Kericho? In fact the director spends more time in his farm in short on horseback than in Nairobi. Kenyan Dream.

There are so many such cases I can lose count. And my friends from Kericho most definitely know these people. I have used individuals I know personally and who I can account for because I don't want to make hollow statements about the possibility of a Kenyan Dream.

5 years ago, I decided to challenge myself like the politician I met 2 years earlier. I did my research and realised that being a millionaire wasn't rocket science. During my research, I went to Gikomba in nairobi and saw how lucrative the timber industry was. I learnt about the different kinds of timber and it's uses and the farming process and patience involved.
The shortest a tree could grow for commercial benefits was about 7 years.

I realised that I had some land in rainy Kericho that I hardly used. I visited a KEFRI office and got all data I required. An acre of land could pack up up to 1800 trees with even spacing. There were two lucrative tree types to plant. Eucalyptus Grandis( Blue Gum) and Cyprus. Since Blue gum were not good near river beds, I only planted 500 of them in controlled management on a 2 acre farm. I then went to lease some 10 acres land elsewhere . Those who have done farming understand that it's cheap to lease land. At about 5k an acre per year, I could lease it for 10 years payable annually. I embarked on planting 20,000 trees and had the drama of managing the seedlings for the first 6 months as they settled into the ground. Thereafter, the trees went up by themselves with prunning each year for the first 4 years.

I went back to Nairobi to continue with my hustle and shamba ya mawe brokenness. The politician had taught me something. He had taught me to look at lumbering the trees and selling them as timber and furniture strips but not as logs. This way, one could easily make about 15k per tree instead of 5k per log. I did the math. I bought few logs, and lumbered them and converted them into finished timber products and I actually sold them to wood work workshops and saw the profits. That was in 2014. So I had the confidence to start the journey. 15k per tree multiplied 20,000 times was 300M. Take out all costs and all inputs and you're still in the hundreds of millions. I realised that if I was lazy and didn't want to lumber them personally, I'd still sell them as logs straight from the farm at 5k per log and still make 100M. And the tree stumps would earn some few more millions in charcoal. All one needed was to sit still for few years. He told me " you'd rather run around for 7 years looking for opportunities and markets and doing other jobs knowing that you've literally grown your money".
So, now you know, in 3 years time, look for me we eat mbuzi in Abu Dhabi. Lol

This is a reality many commercial tree farmers understand.

But wait, we love quick fix solutions. Patience is a virtue we hardly bother with.

An accountant buddy of mine surprised friends a year ago with a brand new BMW X5. We knew he was probably paid by a good auditing client.

Wrong.

He had been saving his money and started a kienyeji chicken business. In a span of a year he had rared 3000 birds. As he went around auditing businesses, he marketed his chicken and soon, he got 4 consistent orders of 320 chicken per month. It was a good number because by the time he exhausted the last one he'd have replenished the flock to meet the monthly demand. At a wholesale price of 800Bob a chicken. He was making 256k per month consistently from his chicken side hustle.

Now back to politicians. In rift valley, other than the commercial agricultural towns, land is cheap and arable. Jackson Kibor has more than 5000 acres. He plants maize. Ruto has thousands of chicken and thousands of acres of land. Farming records alone rake these men hundreds of millions per harvest. Buying houses and choppers are not a big deal, asit's within the income range. Plus, as a business man, owning a chopper is another commercial venture. One can net you a million bob per day, so buying one and managing it professionally has good returns on investment. Here's the funny truth, they're not the most successful farmers.

Bhimji Depar Shah an unknown Kenyan businessman is worth $700M while Kenyatta is $580M.

Reality is relative.

The purpose of this very long post is to prove something, that there are few people who come online to look for inspirations. They need to know that even from villages away from the city, billionaires are made everyday. Don't be too embarrassed to own your story. Remember, swag never fed a man.

The likes of Karume, Kirima, Michuki etc are all villagers who came to the city to conquer... So can you.

The quickest way to depression is to look at your qualifications and academic indoctrination and try to apply it to wealth creation.

Right about now, your education won't make you wealthy. Education will inform you, expose you, train you but your adaptability and astutenes will make you survive the tides.

Khaligraph Jones was recently a broke boy from Kayole. Right now he lives well and can fend for his family. He lives the Kenyan dream.

Negativity will slow you down.

There is a Kenyan dream. Try to find it.

Building Wealth Gradually

The process involves commitment and resilience as well as Enjoying life
How you can grow your money with just Sh. 5,000 only!
============================================================
Kenyan Money: Very often people underestimate the power of money that is within their grasp, argues Waceke Nduati Omanga in this feature that was first published in the Centonomy personal finance online journal:

We find ourselves perpetually waiting for bigger amounts of money as that is what we feel is adequate to start saving or investing with.  We feel that it is only with these huge amounts that we can actually do something significant. And while we are waiting for these big amounts we are usually recklessly spending small amounts of money everyday without realising their value or the alternative use of the money. Secondly we are letting opportunities pass us by.

I think sometimes the disease of instant gratification filters down to our saving or investment mentality.  We want to immediately be able to say we have Kes 50,000 to put aside without realising it is also small amounts over time that build up to Kes 50,000.  Today, we explore the power of Kes 5,000. You might be wondering where to get Kes 5,000 given that your bank account is usually empty by the end of the month.  Well, do you easily spend Kes 170 a day without thinking about it? If you left your house with Kes 170 in your wallet, would it be there at the end of the day?

Ndindi Nyoro: Why employment may never make you rich

Right there is your Kes 5,000 at the end of the month.  Maybe you are spending it on lunch, snacks, drinks but you can make a choice to ensure you have Kes 5,000 every month.  So what can this Kes 5,000 actually do?

You can have a savings account with Kes 5,000.  You can opt to put this money in a savings account.  Many banks will be able to provide this to you and these days even some mobile service providers are offering a solution for these savings. At the end of one year you will have at least accumulated Kes 60,000 plus some interest in this account.

This is money you can use to pay school fees or even go on a holiday. Even if you are not sure where to invest, start here.  Open this savings account even as you research on various areas to invest.  Don’t wait to have the perfect investment to start putting aside your Kes 5,000.  Starting this way will actually start creating the discipline of saving that many of us need to foster.

You may even opt to put this money aside in a SACCO every month and at the end of the year earn dividends on the shares you have accumulated. Just using an example from one of my SACCO clients, you would have earned Kes 6,000 shillings at the end of that year.  This 6,000 can be used to reinvest in something further or enable you to pay your utility bills that month.

Your Kes 5,000 has started making money work for you. Accumulating this amount of money in a SACCO will enable you to borrow up to three times what you have saved.  This means after one year of saving you can borrow Kes 180,000 to do further investment such as a business and in some areas you can buy a plot of land with this. Remember to ONLY borrow for investment and not consumption purposes.  Ensure that the return you will get will exceed the interest you are paying.  Your Kes 5,000 has therefore enabled you to leverage and access good debt for investment purposes.

You can invest in the stock market with Kes 5,000 a month. The minimum number of shares you can buy on the stock exchange is 100, hence as long as you are buying shares that are trading below Kes 50, you can invest. There are actually many fundamentally strong companies that are trading below Kes 50 at the moment that you could actually be accumulating ownership in with this Kes 5,000.

Let’s use an actual scenario.  I have picked one of the banking shares and assumed in the last one year, you had been investing Kes 5,000 per month accumulating this share. In the last one year you would have accumulated 1,800 of these shares.  You would have spent Kes 60,000 (Kes 5,000 x 12) in total but the value of your shares would have been Kes 75,000 (after brokerage commissions).  Of course past performance is not necessarily an indicator of future performance with shares and you would have to do further research on the particular share you are buying but this goes to show that with Kes 5,000 you can actually activate the process of growing the value of your money.

You can invest in Treasury Bonds with Kes 5,000 saved for 10 months.  The minimum investment in a Treasury Bond is Kes 50,000.  You can put aside your Kes 5,000 in a savings account and when it accumulates to Kes 50,000 you simply go and purchase a Treasury Bond.  Depending on the rate offered at the time, this bond will pay you some interest every six months.

You can create or join an investment group with Kes 5,000.  Do you have 10 friends who can join you in this venture to save Kes 5,000 a month? Being able to pool your money with other people will significantly multiply the impact of Kes 5,000.  If there are 10 of you, that means you can put aside Kes 50,000 a month!  In a year you can collect Kes 600,000 (as a group).  You can buy more shares, you can buy larger property, you can start larger business etc.  As a group you can accumulate a significant investment portfolio if you each commit to putting aside Kes 5,000 a month.

Kes 5,000 a month over time is a very significant portion of your Retirement Plan.  Kes 5,000 a month saved over 10 years and earning just 10% p.a. will accumulate to just under Kes 1 mn. Do not hesitate to start with or put an extra Kes 5,000 in your pension fund.

You can eliminate your debts with Kes 5,000. Say you had a loan of Kes 500,000 for 5 years and you were being charged 18%.  If you put an extra Kes 5,000 towards your repayments you will pay off this loan in 3 years instead of 5 and save Kes 100,000 in interest costs in the process.

I could go on and on.  This is just simply an introduction to what you can do with Kes 5,000. When you start taking notice around you of what can be done, more and more ideas will open up.  I know people who have started poultry farming, vegetable trading, catering and various other ventures with this amount of money. Remember that a bird builds its nest one twig at a time.  The nest just doesn’t appear. Let that Kes 5,000 be your first twig. Kenyan Money.

To End Corona Feed the Hungry

In as much as science will help us to win the fight against Covid-19it is the social science approaches that will stop the deaths. One such approach is feeding the hungry. The Current situation Two main pandemics we are fighting at the moment are: 1. Coronavirus 2. Hunger virus. Two main groups of people at the moment fighting the pandemics are...... 1. The Rich and 2. The Poor. The global irony and the African outlook... The rich is afraid of the virus. The poor is afraid of hunger. The rich wants the poor to stay at home to avoid the spread, but hunger won't allow the poor to stay at home. The poor fears that if they stay at home, the hunger virus will kill them. The rich fears that if they also come out of their homes the coronavirus will kill them... What a delicate situation we have ....... Opinion: In order to restore the world to its normal social equilibrium: The rich should assist the poor with food, so that they can stay at home. When the rich succeeds in keeping the poor at home by providing enough food, The spread of the coronavirus which the rich fears the most will be chased out! This is common sense.....Yet because some people have the microphones, all you hear is ...... “stay at home”.......... “stay at home” . How can they stay at home when the hunger virus is at home. Fight coronavirus Fight Hunger. Stay safe.

The Power of Prayers and Worship

The real worship that connects us to God Its good to worship in truth and in spirit Good morning. Word for the Today. Acts.16;25-26. 25.About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26.suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. Pray until chains are loosened. Paul and Silas were beaten and put in prison for preaching the Gospel of Christ and delivering a girl from demon possession. They were chained in the inner cell. They decided to pray and worship God in their situation. They did not lament or complained but chose to Pray. We are imprisoned and chained in various and very difficult and painful let us not complain or lament over the the pains but like Paul and Silas, Let us purpose to pray and worship God until He opens the prison doors and loosen our chains. We are chained by Covid-19 through curfews, lockdown, family separation, financial strains, floods, sicknesses job losses, alcoholism, drug addictions deaths of our loved ones and many others. God answers Prayers. Have prayerful Life

Mercedes Benz -Lesson to Honour Your Wife

The Real women who help their husbands they help themselves The Mercedes Benz brands represents a legacy of its founder, Karl Benz. The near genius Mechanical Engineer was born in Germany. After graduating from university, he started a mechanical engineering shop where he would invent the first ever three wheel car that was internally powered by use of gasoline. Largely uncredited in Benz's mercurial success was his wife. Benz opened the factory with a friend and procured a loan together, unknown to him, the friend was like the modern day Pwagus, who escaped with most money, leaving Benz behind to be auctioned. Benz was auctioned shortly after marrying and paying dowry. In her wisdom, the wife went back for the dowry. Her father did not oppose. But the wife wasn't as dumb too, rather than give Benz the money, she invested in Benz factory and acquired stocks. Her injection to the company gave Benz a new lifeline. That officially marked the start of Mercedes Benz. Karl Benz invented the first ever internally powered car, but it was his wife, with kiherehere, who drove it first. Benz had went to fix some mechanical issues in the factory, when the wife put his two sons on the three wheel car and drove it for over 60 miles. Before that, Benz wasn't sure his invention would travel that far. As she drove to meet her relatives 60 miles away, she lost control akaingia kichaka, after pulling the three wheel vehicle out, she passed over a shoe cobbler, and advised him to fix a heavy leather to the wheel to prevent the quick rotation of the wheel. That was the first invention of break pads, which she patented. It was a great marriage. As Benz demonstrated his ingenuity in the factory with groundbreaking inventions, it is Bertha who pioneered the marketing. Their car brand still carries a mark of prestige globally.

New Songs of Joy

Psalm 126: When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negev. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.

Who really Killed Samson: Himself, Delilah or Philistines

The Answer is himself *WHO KILLED SAMSON?* *Delilah or the Philistines? None of these options is correct. Permit me to tell you how* *Even if there were 10,000 Philistine soldiers, they couldn't have defeated Samson. Do you know why? Samson's strength was not of this world; it was divine. As long as no one can defeat God, no army could have defeated Samson no matter how strong or many* *Samson was raised a terror for the Philistines. He killed a lion with his bare hands, lifted the gate of a city on his shoulder and walked over 46 miles; he killed 300 Philistines soldiers with a jaw bone. What if he got a spear or sword?* *So, who killed Samson? The answer is Samson. Yes! Samson killed himself! A man is his greatest enemy. What an enemy cannot do to a man, he would do to himself. Samson killed himself. He delivered himself to the lap of Delilah and used his own mouth to tell the secret of his power. His life promised so much but delivered so little* *The Bible says, "People ruin their lives by their own stupidity, so why does GOD always get blamed?" (Proverbs 19:3. MSG)* *Nobody can ruin your life except you do with your own hands. Although you can blame it on God or parents or government, you're the architect of your life; you are your greatest enemy. Even if your grandparents had done any evil, until you press the trigger it won't explode on your face* *No Satan or witch has the power to destroy you no matter how much they hate you, you're the only one who can kill yourself by your actions* *When the enemies try in vain to kill you, they lie in wait and allow you to kill yourself by your actions.* *Goliath, the champion couldn't hurt David but adultery destroyed his family. The gentile nations couldn't hurt Moses, but anger killed him. When king Jeroboam stretched his hand against the prophet, his hand dried up; he couldn't hurt him, but his own disobedience turned him to a prey for a lion. Your greatest enemy isn't outside there, it's in you* *Millions are killing themselves with their own mouth by what they eat and drink. Millions die of sexually transmitted diseases every year. Would you blame a witch for that?* *Hundreds of thousands of divorce and breakup happen every year because people destroy their own marriages and homes with their own hands. Like Proverbs 14:1 says "Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands.* *If you fail, don't look far away, look inwards because what's killing you is inside of you. What you yield yourself to will either kill or save you. If you continue yielding yourself to fornication, that's what will kill you both spiritually or physically* *Everyone has a seed of sin deposited in him through his Adamic nature. True repentance kills that seed but if you don't kill that anger, pride, jealousy, greed, lust, it won't just kill you in the future, it might have been killing you already. That's why no matter how much people die of cancer and diabetics people won't stop smoking and drinking because a man signs his own death warrant* *Kill that seed before it kills you. Quit that habit, now! Because your greatest enemy isn't a man or a spirit or Satan but you. Yes, You!* *Bless someone with this message today.*

Communion with Holy Spirit

Psalm 34:1-11 I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

You are Amazing

There’s Something Amazing about You “...But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11, NIV) So often we look at others and think, Wow, they are so amazing, and I’m so ordinary. They’re so smart, and I’m so average. She’s so beautiful, but I’m so plain. While it’s true that they may be amazing in certain areas, you have to realize there’s something amazing about you as well. You are talented, you are attractive, and you have been fearfully and wonderfully made. While God wants us to celebrate others, He wants you to be celebrated as well. You didn’t get left out when God was handing out the gifts, the talents, or the looks. He put something in you that will cause you to shine. You can be a great businessperson, a great teacher, a great mother. Don’t get so focused on what somebody else has that you don’t realize what you have. You have to know who you are. God breathed His life into you. You are His masterpiece. Don’t compare yourself. Celebrate yourself. You are blessed and favoured!

Trusting God in calamities

The will of God is supreme #MorningDevotion Psalms 91:9‭-‬11 AMP Because you have made the Lord , [who is] my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil will befall you, Nor will any plague come near your tent. For He will command His angels in regard to you, To protect and defend and guard you in all your ways [of obedience and service]. To many believers psalm 91 is the protective psalm. God is able to protect his people and the Bible is full of examples that we can fall back on to encourage ourselves and one another especially in a season like this. Our God is the same yesterday today and forever. If he did it before He can and will do it again. He protected the children of Israel in Egypt when the plaques hit and he preserved their lives. He is the same God who protected the three Hebrew boys when they were thrown into the fiery furnace that had been heated 7 times more than normal. He is the same God who protected Daniel in the lions den. When we are faced with situations like what the world is facing now, situations that remind us how weak we are as humans; we who are believers should not panic like the rest of the world. Instead we should look to God because our lives are no longer our own. We belong to God and he is able to protect us. As the Bible says, some may trust in horses and chariots but we will trust in the name of our God. Isaiah 54:17 AMP No weapon that is formed against you will succeed; And every tongue that rises against you in judgment you will condemn. This [peace, righteousness, security, and triumph over opposition] is the heritage of the servants of the Lord , And this is their vindication from Me,” says the Lord . Reflective Thoughts Do you believe that nothing is impossible with our God? ___________________________________________________________________________ This pandemic has caught the attention of the world, do you see this as an opportunity as a believer to share with them about the God you believe in? ___________________________________________________________________________

How much time do you spend on Prayers

How much time do you spend on Prayers Luke 5:15‭-‬16 NKJV However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. It was Martin Luther who said " I have so much to do I will spend the first three hours in prayer" The power behind the ministry of Jesus was his prayer life but because it is referred to in such a subtle way, many of us miss it. We read about the many miracles he did and how he was a master communicator who drew crowds wherever he went and we are wowed by that not realizing that all that was a fruit of his prayer life. The more the crowds came to him and he ministered to them, the more he withdrew into the wilderness alone to spend time with God in prayer. Our key verse says that he himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. He himself tells me that he made a resolve and he always followed through on it. It shows personal responsibility meaning that he did not pray that often because he was Jesus, no, he made a choice to do so because he recognized the importance of prayer in his assignment.

Priority and Power

Prayer Life of Jesus: Priority and Power Luke 5:15‭-‬16 NKJV However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities.

When we Pray

Identity and Validation Luke 3:21‭-‬22 NIV When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” One thing that is very evident about Jesus his ministry and purpose here on earth, is that it was driven by prayer. When Jesus prayed, things happened and there are lots of lessons for us to learn when we take a close look at his prayer life. The first time we hear about Jesus praying in the book of Luke is when he was baptized by the John the Baptist and something supernatural happened. The bible says that the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove. The prayers of Jesus tapped into the supernatural and opened a door for the Holy Spirit to descend on Him. Reminds me of the book of Acts when they were all in one place in one accord and in prayer and the Holy Spirit fell on them in the form of tongues of fire. Prayer does the same for us today if engage in it with the right motive and attitude of heart, it becomes the bridge between the natural and supernatural world. The other supernatural thing that happened is that Gods audible voice was heard from heaven and what God said is a huge revelation to us.

Marks of a disciple of Jesus: Rooted in the Word

Marks of a disciple of Jesus: Rooted in the Word 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for [a]instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. You cannot separate a true disciple of Jesus Christ with the bible. They always walk together. The bible is Gods word to us in fact, it is so important that God says that heaven and earth will pass away but his word will never pass away. You cannot claim to be a disciple of Jesus Christ yet you have no connection and love for his word. It is through this word that our minds are renewed and our faith is activated and strengthened day by day. Through this word we are corrected and aligned to the will and purposes of God. It is through this same word that we gain understanding of who God is and the promises he has declared over our life. Without the word then a believer cannot walk in victory. The psalmist says; thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, meaning that when we as disciples of Jesus walk in the word then we are always walking in the light knowing which direction to go.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A Theme: Be aware of evil

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A Theme: Be aware of evil Few among us will dispute the fact that the world is fraught with evil. Newspapers, radio or television broadcasts offers adequate proof of its presence. War, victims of violence, millions of refugees and all types of abuse demonstrates pervasive evil in human society. While existence of evil is somehow unavoidable, its origin and the tragedies it produces have been the subject of debate for centuries. Contemporary analysts attribute its ills which plague us into conflict to ideologies and economic imbalances. At the beginning of this Lenten season, the Church invites us to reflect on the reality of evil and see how we can overcome it. First reading: Genesis 2:7-9, 3:1-7 As part of the primeval history, we encounter in the first eleven chapters of Genesis Yahwistic and Priestly traditions which assert that God was caring for human beings beyond measure. However evil as we view it today was not absent as Genesis presents answers to some of life’s basic questions about why this world, its creatures and humankind die, feel pain, suffer and are hostile. Why hard work and perspiration, and why peoples of this earth are estranged from one another. Each of these questions is explored and solutions are proffered, not on the basis of scientific investigation, archaeological discoveries or chronicled historical developments but rather in a language of myth, poetic and theology. In fact, to expect scientific and strict historical accuracy from Genesis is to miss the point. In today’s text, the truth consists in the fact that evil exists in this world because there is aitia, a Greek which means cause and loggia which means reason. Using traditional themes and motifs which were prevalent in the neighboring cultures e.g. garden, tree of life, serpent, flood, ark, tower, the biblical authors fully presented truth to their audience in strict monotheism which was a distinctive mark of Israel’s faith. As portrayed by today’s reading, man/Adam was formed by God from the clay of the earth/ damah and enlivened by the very breath of God with the intension that humanity should live in happiness. Unfortunately today’s reading does not include Genesis 2:15-25 wherein God instructed humanity not to eat of the tree ‘of the knowledge of good and evil’ meaning that right from the start, God was attentiveness about humanity’s welfare. More importantly, the omitted passage also narrated the formation of woman as man’s ezer, his treasured helpmate whose equality with man God acknowledges. Though duly instructed and warned of the consequences of their actions, human beings freely chose to determine their future apart from God. Having surrendered their original integrity of original justice for which they had been created they plunged themselves into the problem of unending evil. As we consider the times we have surrendered our integrity depriving ourselves of justice, we are encouraged to be careful about evil in our world rather than behaving as if evil was fiction. Second reading: Romans 5:12-19 When the participants at the second Vatican Council reflected upon the condition of humanity they acknowledged that, “man has inclinations toward evil as he finds himself incapable of battling its assaults successfully, thus finding self-bound by its chain” Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World No.13. In his Epistle to the Romans, Paul refers to these evil chains as reign of sin, condemnation and death only broken by Jesus Christ. Using Adam as type and Christ as antitype, Paul says human sin and its consequences are only challengeable by Christ’s saving action. Though sin and evil came from one person; he was able to infect the rest of humanity thus causing all of us to sin cf. Romans 5:12. The Council of Trent understood this as original sin committed by Adam and inherited by all of humanity cf. 5th session, canons 2, 4. Later in his letter, Paul will clarify his point by describing the consequences of Adam’s sin as an inclination to evil which is in every human person cf. Romans 6:12. All the same this universal contagious environment of evil and its innate tendency which is also called concupiscence does not negate personal responsibility and culpability. Just as Adam freely chose to surrender his original integrity, each of us is capable of freely following suit. Only with Jesus, is this chain reaction broken and the situation reversed because His saving action is a gift cf. Romans 5:16. Gospel: Matthew 4:1-11 Ordinarily, the English word temptation connotes seduction to evil, enticement to sin and inclination to take the wrong path. In Greek, however, the term used by Matthew to describe Jesus’ experience in the wilderness is peirazein, which means to test. Just as tempered steel is tested to ascertain its strength and resistance to stress and strain, so the experience of Jesus was intended to ascertain his strength and ability to withstand difficulties. Temptation is not meant to lead us into sin but to enable us to conquer it, to prove we are not bad, weak but good, stronger, purer and finer. Temptation is not the penalty of being a human person; it is instead meant to provide us the glory of being the real person God appreciates. In each of his three confrontations with the tempter, Matthew portrays Jesus as the New Israel. Just as God had called Israel out of Egypt to be his people, so God called Jesus out of Egypt; see Matthew 2:15. Just as God led his people through the sea to the desert where they remained for forty years, so did Jesus come up from the baptismal waters and depart to the desert for forty days and nights cf. Matthew 3:16, 4:1. Whereas Israel’s experience in the desert was marked by repeated failures and infidelities, Jesus remained faithful. Jesus first temptation recalled God’s gift of manna to Israel in the desert cf. Exodus 16:4-8 and tested him in his capacity as the Son of God. Would he use his powers as the Son of God to play the role of a political and social messiah by feeding a hungry mankind? Jesus’ response, a citation of Deuteronomy 8:3 indicated that God’s word and will would be his food and the sustenance which he, in turn, would offer to hungry humankind. The second temptation, also a test of Jesus’ authentic sonship, recalled the wilderness incidents wherein Israel complained against God and annoyed Moses into asking God for a show of power saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Exodus 17:7. Refusing to test God or to force his hand, Jesus’ replied by citing another text in it fullness, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you did at Massah” Deuteronomy 6:16 Then in the third test, Jesus is offered a vision of all the world’s kingdoms in their splendor. No doubt here that Matthew intended to remind all who would reflect on this message to remember two scripture texts; one which described Moses atop Mount Nebo surveying the Promised Land in Deuteronomy 34:1-4, and the other referring to an enthronement psalm which described God giving his messiah-son-king the nations of the earth as an inheritance in Psalm. 2:6-8. Jesus’ response, again from Deuteronomy 6:13 recalled Israel’s dalliances into idolatry. Refusing to worship his tempter, Jesus remained a faithful Son of the Father. Later in the gospel, when Peter attempted to divert Jesus from his Father’s saving plan, Jesus would dismiss him just as he did the tempter, ‘Away with you Satan’. Not ended here, Jesus’ testing as God’s Son would be reprised during his passion “If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross” Matthew 27:40. But Jesus was not to be deterred from his Father’s will. Today at the outset of Lent, Matthew offers us a lesson in resistance to evil and reminds us to keep the promise. Application Lent is a season of penance set apart by Mother Church in memory of the forty days when our Lord Jesus was tempted in the desert, we fast with Him as a means for our sanctification. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, the Lenten Season offers us a time to fasting and prayer so as to gain spiritual strength in order to resist all forms of temptations. Make this Lent to be a time to firmly say, ‘Away with you Satan’! This Lent should makes each one of us to sincerely profess that I believe in One God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth and Jesus Christ his only Son Our Lord and my saviour. HOMILY ASH WEDNESDAY THEME: BE PURIFIED AND BE RECONCILED TO GOD

HOMILY ASH WEDNESDAY THEME: BE PURIFIED AND BE RECONCILED TO GOD My brothers and sisters in Christ, today we are entering a new season, one of penance and mortification. Together, we have gathered here to celebrate ‘Ash Wednesday’, the first of forty days of the Lenten Season that precedes Easter. On this special occasion, we are called to be reconciled to God. Through the sacramental of ashes that is symbolic of penance, we are reminded that we as sinners are but dust and ashes cf. Genesis 18:27 Today, in preparation for the joy of Easter that approaches, we need to call upon the mercy of the Lord Jesus, asking Him for His blessings and forgiveness for the Heavenly Father does not want us to die but to live with the risen Christ who reigns forever and ever. As such, through the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, we ought to prepare ourselves to celebrate the death and glorious Resurrection of Christ our Saviour by being cleansed from our sins through a renewal of spirit. The spiritual practice of applying ashes on oneself as a sign of sincere repentance goes back thousands of years. Frequently in the days of the old and the New Testament, as we have heard from the readings of the Scriptures during the past year, when someone had sinned, had to dress in sack clothes and cover self with ashes cf. Jeremiah 6:26.The rite that we are observing today arises from that custom as a form of spiritual practice for observing public penitence. Church history tells us that the liturgical practice of applying ashes on one's forehead during the Lenten Season goes back as far as the eight century. This was accompanied by different forms of fasting, prayer, sacrifice and charity towards others. The writings of St. Leo, around 461 A.D, tell us that during the Lenten Season, he exhorted the faithful to abstain from certain food to fulfill with their fasts the Apostolic institution of forty days. We who happen to live in the age of consumerism, this form of prayer is important since it will assist us to reflect on the gift of life and of one another. First reading: Joel 2:12-18 As we heard during today’s first reading from the Book of Joel, the Lord God calls upon us to return to Him with all our hearts, with fasting, weeping and mourning. We are told to split apart our hearts, not our clothing. In the days of the Old Testament, many tore their clothing as a sign of repentance. But, while some tore their clothing to demonstrate an exterior sign; they just stopped at that. There was no true repentance because inside them their hearts of stone had not changed! They had not let go of their worldly ways to embrace holy. To practice sincere repentance, the Lord God tells us to change our hearts. We are called to examine our most inner self; those evil ways that we have to let go once and for all. During this holy season we ought to remember that the Lord God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not punish us if we are sincere and if we are willing to turn away from our sins. God is not a God of punishment but a God of love to those who strive earnestly to walk in His righteous ways. Prophet Joel reminds us that our sanctification in the likeness of God is not just for a few people. It is for all of us who have placed our faith in Christ on the day we received the Sacrament of Baptism. The following reminders need to provoke our hearts as we are told to assemble the aged, to gather the children, and even the breast fed infants. Joel even goes further to propose what would sound impossible that let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her canopy. This is a very powerful command that includes everyone, of all ages! This is the holy season when the ministers of the Church beg the Lord, asking Him on behalf of the people, to show His mercy upon humanity. This is the time when the ministers of the Church remind the Lord of His promises made to Abraham, our spiritual father, that we will inherit the Promised Land, the eternal Kingdom of God. The practice of reminding the Lord God of His promises is to draw His pity upon us who are weak sinners. It is in doing so that He will not forget us. It is also a moment to assure us that we will not be mocked by those who say, ‘Where is your God?’ For our Lord God keeps His promises. He will save those who walk in righteousness in daily communion with Him. In this era of the joy of the Gospel, we need to gaze our eyes on the one who alone can save us and that is Lord God ever loving. Second reading: 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2 During this second reading, we heard St. Paul appealing to us on behalf of Jesus to be reconciled to God. God the Father sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us on the cross. He who was without sin took our place and was treated as a sinner, so we might become righteous in the eyes of God. What a horrible death we deserved; the death that Christ endured for us is beyond telling. All this was possible because of God’s divine love for us. Today once again, God reminds us that He heard our cries that were raised to Heaven. By hearing us from heaven, God has helped us to secure our salvation. Now is the time for us to show our appreciation towards this act of love by walking in His righteousness so that we may inherit the salvation that we have asked of Him and which He is granting to us through His infinite care and mercy. This is a wonderful invitation that we should not let pass by us. Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 How do we walk in righteousness? Jesus answered that question during today’s Gospel according to Matthew. We walk in righteousness by not continuing to live in our worldly ways but by embracing a spiritual mind so that we mature in Christ through the grace of God the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus warns us against hypocrisy common to those who are pious so that they may be seen by others. He says that they have received their rewards through those who admired them and praised them for it. For them, there is no reward from God the Father in Heaven. During this Lenten Season, our piety must manifest private and privileged time between the Lord God and ourselves. We must experience a transformation of our whole being beyond going to Church. We must walk with Christ in our lives every minute of the day, from the time we rise in the morning until the time we go to bed at night. Equally, when you sacrifice by giving to the Church or by reaching out to someone in need, your left hand must not know what your right hand is doing. Do it privately and then forget about it. If you give a larger contribution to the Church so you can receive a larger reward, then you may be missing the point. Important must be as Christ is instructing us that our right hand must not knows what our left hand is doing. Meaning, our right hand is giving while our left hand is waiting to receive its benefit. If you decide to increase your time of prayer during the Lenten Season, do not do it in open space during the busy hours so that others will see you and applause your piety. If that is the case, then such a behavior will make you will receive your reward on earth by those who will praise you for your demonstrations. Rather when you pray, go into your bedroom, close the door and pray to God the Father in private so the Heavenly Father may see you in private and reward you accordingly. If you decide to fast, do not overdo it to the extent that you look weak and sick so the others will notice that you are fasting. Fast to the degree that you can manage, always being cheerful and looking healthy so no one but God will know that you are fasting. Then, God the Father will reward you. All this is intended to assist us to be reconciled to God! These are the guidelines that the Church has received from God so the faithful may experience true repentance in order to receive Divine mercy and forgiveness. As you enter the Lenten Season, remember these words every day! Practice them! And I assure you that God shall reward you! Application This is a privileged time for all of us to make a deep examination of conscience so that we can repent and receive the good news of our salvation. Repentance is not only a favor that God is granting us but an opportunity to renew our lives for the better. This is also a time of deep reflection that leads us to mortification and fasting. In disciplining our bodies we become better people. Lent is also an occasion of cheerful almsgiving, because the Lord loves a cheerful giver cf. 2Corithians 9:7. It is in giving that we receive and in loving we are born into eternal life. Fr Paulino Mondo

THE OBSERVANCE OF LENT AND THE SIMPLE EXPLANATION OF WHAT IT IS

THE OBSERVANCE OF LENT AND THE SIMPLE EXPLANATION OF WHAT IT IS The penitential season of Lent is the period of forty days beginning on Ash Wednesday. It is a season of the Church year which commemorates the forty days Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness before he began his public ministry of preaching for repentance. Six Sundays are within the season, the last, Passion Sunday, marks the beginning of Holy Week. Holy Thursday begins the Triduum “three days” before Easter day, which includes Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Pre-Lenten Season Prior to the Second Vatican Council, the pre-Lenten penitential season began on the Sunday three weeks before the beginning of Lent, called Septuagesima. The word Septuagesima (seventieth) was a supposed to be a reminder of the seventy years of the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish people, and thus of our captivity in sin, although this Sunday was actually only sixty-three days before Easter. The succeeding pre-Lenten Sundays were called Sexagesima and Quinquagesima. Just as in Lent, violet vestments were worn and the Alleluia was omitted from Mass. The liturgical changes initiated by the Council removed this anticipated pre-Lenten penitential season, however, and the Church returned to the earlier practice of beginning Lent on Ash Wednesday. The Sundays between Epiphany and the beginning of Lent are now in the season called Ordinary Time. Carnival in Liturgy Carnival is from the Latin Carnevale or "farewell to meat," and it is a time of joyful feasting and fun. The practice of celebrating carnival probably began in ancient times when the Sunday a week before the beginning of Lent was called Dominica Carnevala, or "farewell to meat Sunday". Suggestions for Family Activities on Tuesday before Ash Wednesday Families can make this Tuesday a spiritual time of preparation for Lent by going to confession where this is possible this is a sort of spiritual pantry cleaning. Decide on Lenten sacrifices appropriate to the age of each child, reminding them that our souls need this spiritual exercise to gain strength for living as Christians, just as our bodies need exercise to remain healthy. Our sacrifices are like a gift offered to God, and all real gifts 'cost' the giver something. Our Lenten spiritual preparations should not be confined to giving up things. We should "take on" things, extra prayers, especially family prayers. If your family has not already established some form of family prayer, Lent is a good time to begin. If you have not established the habit of praying together as a family, and in our busy times it is difficult, do set aside some time this Lent to do it. Fathers and mothers can plan together what form this will take -- whether as simple as saying the Angelus every night after supper, or as elaborate as reciting Psalms daily together in the evening. What ever is put aside in form of sacrifice has to be passed on in charity to those most in need. Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Fast The main current of Lent must flow through the interior human person, through hearts and consciences. The essential effort of repentance consists in this. In this effort the human determination to be converted to God is invested with the predisposing grace of conversion and, at the same time, of forgiveness and of spiritual liberation. This reflection by Pope John Paul II in Lent of 1979, recorded in a collection of his meditations, ‘The Light of Christ’, indicates the attitude with which we should approach our observance of this penitential season, a season which begins with a sign of repentance so ancient as to be almost lost in antiquity, and continues with penitential action equally ageless. Putting ashes on our heads as a form of penitence is a practice inherited from Jewish tradition. The ashes imposed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday are a reminder of our unworthiness and sinfulness which corrupts stains and leads us to death (we return to the dust from whence we came.) Ashes remind us of our original sin and our need of redemption; our need to be cleansed of sin and made worthy of Salvation. Fasting and Penance Today The Code of Canon Law number.1250-1251 states that Fridays throughout the year and in the time of Lent are penitential days for the entire Church. Although fasting usually refers to any practice of restricting food, there is a distinction, in the Church, between fast that is, limiting food to one full meal a day and abstaining from eating meat. Abstinence from meat on Fridays as the universal form of penance on all Fridays should be encouraged since there are several excuses for not fulfilling our observations. We may choose another way of observing the Church's requirement for acts of penance on Fridays, but we are not to neglect the original traditions for the sake of personal preferences. Both fast and abstinence are required on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil. Farewell to Alleluia and Gloria During the penitential seasons of the Church, the Gloria and the Alleluia are not said or sung. The Gloria is sung only at the Mass on Holy Thursday, usually with great ceremony, organ, trumpets, and often with the ringing of bells. After the singing of the Gloria, musical instruments are to be kept silent until the Alleluia at the Easter Vigil. Catholic families are encouraged to imitate this solemn silence by not playing instrumental music in their homes at this time. Suggestions for families Lent is a time for each of us to increase our knowledge of the ‘faith that is in us’ in order that we can fulfil our vocation as Christians to extend this rich blessing of faith to others. We accomplish personal renewal and revitalization of our faith through penance, prayer and instruction. Fasting The value of self-denial must be learned early in a person's life. Lent provides an excellent opportunity to teach our selves and the children the necessity of self-denial in our permissive society. A spirit of fasting can include restriction of luxuries such as television watching, shopping and going out with friends. We can give away clothing or possessions to those in need or we can give time to the Lord by volunteering our services. Special prayers and devotions Whenever possible we can go to daily Mass, and pray more often alone or with family members. Children could make a memories card or banner to be ‘veiled during Lent’ and displayed prominently during the Easter season. Initiate a practice of saying extra prayers at family meals. One ancient prayer which reminds us of the multifaceted nature of penance is the following prayer said by the Eastern Church during the Lenten fast. Read passages in Scripture which help to explain the meaning of fasting and of penance in our lives. For study and reflection Families might develop a Lenten reading program to replace some of the television shows we have given up for Lent. Also, reading aloud from the Bible or from a Catholic classic every evening for half an hour can be a way of fostering family conversation about the Catholic faith. During Lent we should divide our reading into three parts: something for the mind, something for the heart, something for the soul. Laetare Sunday The Fourth Sunday of Lent is called Laetare (Rejoice) Sunday, from the first words of the liturgy. Since it is in the middle of Lent, like Gaudete Sunday midway through Advent, Laetare reminds us of the Event we look forward to at the end of the penitential season. As on Gaudete Sunday, rose-colored vestments may replace violet, symbolizing, the Church's joy in anticipation of the Resurrection. Passiontide Passiontide is the last two weeks of Lent, when the readings and prayers of the liturgy focus on the Passion of Our Lord. The word passion in the Christian sense does not mean an intense emotion; it refers to the historical events of Jesus' suffering and death. Although for several Centuries the Fifth Sunday of Lent was known as Passion Sunday; after the Second Vatican Council this name was restored to the Sunday at beginning of Holy Week, formerly called Palm Sunday. As a penitential season of the Church, Passiontide is evidently even more ancient than Lent. Devotions and Prayers for Passiontide Among the traditional devotions of Passiontide are saying the Stations of the Cross, praying the Rosary, meditating on the five Sorrowful Mysteries, and saying the five prayers in honour of Christ's five wounds. It is fitting, during this season, that we remember Mary and her in-expressible grief at the suffering and death of her Son. Another ancient devotion for this season was The Seven Sorrows (Dolors) of Mary. Christian believers appealed to Mary, the Mother of Sorrows who publicly shared in her Son's suffering on the road to Calvary, taking all things upon herself-concern, affliction and sorrow. This devotion listed the Seven Sorrows of Mary as: 1. The prophecy of Simeon, 2. The flight to Egypt, 3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the temple, 4.His way of the Cross, 5. His Crucifixion, 6. The piercing of His heart on Calvary, and 7. His burial in the tomb. Passion Sunday Holy Week is the most solemn and intense period of worship in the Christian faith, begins with Passion Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. In spite of the spiritual gravity of Holy Week, it begins with joy; for on this Sunday, the Church celebrates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem which foretells the victory of His Resurrection and His return to earth in glory; and with the first reading of the Passion in the liturgies of Holy Week, the Church begins her commemorative pilgrimage with her Lord on His way to Calvary. Blessed Palms The blessing and distribution of palms takes place on Passion Sunday, and altar decorations are palm branches rather than flowers. The palms are solemnly blessed by the priest, and each worshipper holds the blessed palm during the singing of the ancient hymn, Gloria Laus/All Glory, Laud and Honour” and during reading of the Passion. Palm Procession According to the account of a fifth-century Spanish pilgrim to the Holy Land, Passion Sunday Mass was celebrated in Jerusalem at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. After this the people were invited to meet again in the afternoon at the Mount of Olives, in the Church of Eleona the grotto of the Our Father”. They then proceeded to the Church of the Ascension for a service consisting of hymns and antiphons, readings and prayers, where at five o'clock in the afternoon the Gospel and the palms were read and the procession set out for the city. The people responded to the antiphons with the acclamation, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord," as we say even today. Holy Week Holy Week has been held in great reverence since the very early years of the Church. No other Christian observance has interested the world so much as Holy Week. For the rituals of the Church during these few days of each year, so complex and so laden with meaning, emphatically and prophetically proclaim to the entire world the liberating and redeeming and perpetual truth of the Gospel, the Good News that Christ has died, Christ is risen and Christ will come again. Although in our time and nation the Church's only required food fast is to restrict meals (fast) and to abstain from meat (abstinence) on Good Friday, we learn from medieval Church documents that Christians observed a strict fast from Monday of Holy Week to the cock-crow of Easter Day. A very strict fast was usually observed from Thursday evening to Easter morning. Confession and the Easter Duty The discipline of fasting from food is not the only nor is even the primary way in which we must prepare our entire selves, body and soul to receive the benefits of our Saviour redeeming sacrifice. Physical fasting is not enough. This is what the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council, like the early Fathers of the Church, tried to teach us with the emphasis on personal awareness of how we have offended God and need His forgiveness. As Blessed John Paul II said “The awareness of sin, in which the person knows before whom and towards whom he is guilty, is an indispensable pre-condition for obtaining the objective value of forgiveness. This is because He against whom the sin is committed and who is therefore offended is also the Father who has the power to forgive it.” This is what the Church invites and implores us to do during Holy Week. The Triduum In the Triduum, or Three Days that is: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday; the Church gives us a singularly dramatic, intense and richly symbolic expression of the very heart of Christian belief. Even in our unspiritual time and culture, the Triduum and Easter re-affirms the essence of the Church's central beliefs in the strongest possible way which penetrates the deepest recesses of the human heart, and calls forth a response from all, young and old, rich and poor, and in every state of life. By participating in the liturgy of the Church and by increasing our own observance of these holy days, we can deepen our understanding of these Events in the history of Salvation. Holy Thursday Holy Thursday is the most complex and profound of all religious services, saving only the Easter Vigil. It celebrates both the institution by Christ himself of the Eucharist and of the institution of the sacerdotal priesthood as distinct from the 'priesthood of all believers; for in this, His last supper with the disciples, a celebration of Passover, He is the self-offered Passover Victim, and every ordained priest to this day presents this same sacrifice, by Christ's authority and command, in exactly the same way. The Last Supper was also Christ's farewell to His assembled disciples, some of whom would betray, desert or deny Him before the sun rose again. There is such an abundance of symbolism in the solemn celebration of the events of Holy Thursday; layer upon layer, in fact that we can no more than hint at it in these few words. It has inspired great works of art and literature. Family Activities for Holy Thursday The family can prepared a Christian adaptation of a Passover Seder, simple enough for use in families with young children. This special meal stresses the Christian significance of elements of the traditional Jewish Passover meal (seder) as it may have been celebrated in our Lord's time. It is neither a re-enactment of the Last Supper, nor a Jewish service. Holy Thursday’s emphasis on ritual washing also gave rise to the ancient tradition of spring cleaning, evidently related to the Jewish custom of ritually cleaning the home in preparation for the Feast of Passover. Adults and children who are old enough to accompany their parents can return to Church after Mass for a period of Adoration. The Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross continue to be a popular devotion in both the Eastern and Western Churches. It was developed during the Crusades when the knights and pilgrims began to follow the route of Christ's way to Calvary. This devotion spread throughout Europe and was promulgated by the Franciscan friars in the 14th and 15th centuries. Eventually, the Stations of the Cross became an important catechetical tool, and the popularity of this devotion inspired some of the greatest examples of medieval Christian art. Some scholars believe that medieval miracle plays, which were essentially tableaux of Christ's life, developed from the sculptured representations of the Stations of the Cross in the great Churches. These scenes from the Way of the Cross have provided inspiration for many of the world's greatest works of visual art. During Lent and Holy Week most parishes have a service of Stations at least once. It is worth taking children to this so that they can participate with other Catholics in this timeless and very moving devotion. Good Friday On Good Friday, the entire Church fixes its gaze on the Cross at Calvary. Each member of the Church tries to understand at what cost Christ has won our redemption. In the solemn ceremonies of Good Friday, in the veneration of the Cross, in the chanting of the 'Reproaches', in the reading of the Passion, and in receiving the pre-consecrated Host, we unite ourselves to our Saviour, and we contemplate our own death to sin in the Death of our Lord. The liturgical observance of this day of Christ's suffering, crucifixion and death evidently has been in existence from the earliest days of the Church. No Mass is celebrated on this day, but the service of Good Friday is called the Mass of the Pre-sanctified because communion which had already been consecrated on Holy Thursday is given to the faithful. We can see that the parts of the Good Friday service correspond to the divisions of Mass: 1. The liturgy of the Word - reading of the Passion. 2. The intercessory prayers for the Church and the entire world, Christian and non-Christian. 3. Veneration of the Cross 4. Communion, or the Mass of the Pre-Sanctified. Some churches hold prayer services during the three hours of Christ's suffering on the Cross. It would be appropriate to observe a period of silence at home, for devotional reading and private prayer for example no radio, television, especially between the hours of noon and three o'clock in the afternoon. The Cross In the symbol of the Cross we can see the magnitude of the human tragedy, the ravages of original sin, and the infinite love of God. Lent is a particularly appropriate time to attempt to penetrate the true meaning of this sacred image through prayerful contemplation; and to study the traditions surrounding the Christian symbol of the Cross. Looking at the Cross in prayer helps us truly to see it. It is fitting that Christians glorify the Cross as a sign of Christ's resurrection and victory over sin and death. But we should remember each time we see a cross that the Cross of Jesus' crucifixion was an emblem of physical anguish and personal defilement, not triumph of debasement and humiliation, not glory of degradation and shame, not beauty. It was a means of execution, like a gallows or a gas chamber. What the Son of God endured for us was the depth of ugliness and humiliation. We need to be reminded of the tremendous personal cost of love. As Lent advances we contemplate the redeeming Mystery of the Cross which aids the Church in her pursuit of the renewal of the faithful. The Sign of the Cross is a visible sign of one's belief in Christ and of one's hope in the redemption which flows from His Cross. Accompanied by the invocation of the Trinity (Doxology), "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit", making a sign of the cross is a simple and beautiful form of Christian devotion. By making this sign both in public and in private we affirm our faith in Christ crucified and ask for His blessing and protection. It is also a gesture of reverence to the Blessed Sacrament. Holy Saturday Holy Saturday (in Latin, Sabbatum Sanctum), the day of the entombed Christ,' is the Lord's Day of rest, for on that day Christ's body lay in His tomb. We recall the Apostle's Creed which says “He descended unto the dead.” It is a day of suspense between two worlds, that of darkness, sin and death, and that of the Resurrection and the restoration of the Light of the World. For this reason no divine services are held until the Easter Vigil at night. Ideally, Holy Saturday should be the quietest day of the year. Nightfall on Holy Saturday is time for joy and greatest expectation because of the beautiful liturgy of the Easter Vigil, often referred to as the Mother of all Holy Vigils, or the Great Service of Light. As with Christmas, the secular aspects of the Easter season threaten to overwhelm its religious significance. And as in Advent, which is a penitential season also, the solemnity of the events we celebrate during Holy Week risk being obscured by the advance preparations which we may make for the joyous celebration of Easter. As Catholics, we need to keep this in mind, and not put out the Easter decorations before Easter. Holy Week and especially the Triduum. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday are so rich with meaning that we must be careful not to lose any of it, and to make our observances fit the solemnity or the celebration. By any festive celebration, Easter is our greatest cause of rejoicing. Take advantage and follow keenly all preparation. The Easter Vigil The night vigil of Easter signifies Christ's passage from the dead to the living by the liturgy which begins in darkness “sin, death” and is enlightened by the fire and the candle representing Lumen Christi ‘the Light of Christ’ just as the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, the community of believers, is led from spiritual darkness to the light of His truth. Christ's baptism, which our own baptism imitates, is represented during the liturgy by the blessing of the water of baptism by immersing the candle representing His Body into the font. During the liturgy we recall God's sparing of the Hebrews whose doors were marked with the blood of the lamb; we are sprinkled with the blessed water by which we were cleansed from original sin through Christ's sacrifice, and we repeat our baptismal vows, renouncing Satan and all his works. We rejoice at Christ's bodily resurrection from the darkness of the tomb; and we pray for our passage from death into eternal life, from sin into grace, from the weariness and infirmity of old age to the freshness and vigour of youth, from the anguish of the Cross to peace and unity with God, and from this sinful world unto the Father in heaven. Easter Day and Easter Season With these joyous words Christians have greeted one another on Easter Day for nearly two thousand years. And every Easter the words proclaim anew the faith and hope of every Christian in the Good News of God's profound love of mankind, a love which conquers death. Whenever Christians greet one another with these exultant phrases we affirm the unity of believers throughout all times and ages until He comes again in glory. Every Christian family can establish the custom of exchanging this historic greeting, which is also a profession of faith, on Easter morning. It would set an appropriate tone of rejoicing for the entire day. Mass on Easter Day is the most splendid and exuberant celebration of the Church. For this is the Sunday of Sundays, the day of Resurrection of Christ, the centre and foundation of our faith. As St. Paul said, “If Christ has not risen, then your faith is vain” 1 Cor. 15:14, 17. Thus Easter is the pinnacle of all feasts of the Church year which began with Advent, or the expectation of the coming of the Messiah, sent by God to provide the means for our Salvation. The culmination of the entire liturgy is the Easter feast. Families who attend Mass on Easter Day join millions of Christians all over the world, past and present in joyous affirmation of our redemption through the love of Christ, our hope of salvation, and our faith in the resurrection from the dead and the life of the world to come. Although the Easter Vigil and Mass fulfils the obligation for Easter Mass, the Easter Day celebration is a highlight that many will not want to miss, and it is permissible to attend both. Alleluia Every element of the festive celebration of Mass on Easter Day resounds with the great Alleluia; the triumphant word of praise for God of men and angels. Alleluia (or hallelujah) is a Hebrew word adopted by the Christian Church. Another familiar Hebrew word is amen, ‘so be it’ Hallel is the greatest expression of praise in Hebrew. Combined with Jah, the shortened form of the name of God, JHVH meaning ‘I AM’, it becomes Hallelujah. Alleluia is a Latinized spelling. The Lord's Day Every Sunday is a celebration of the Day of the Lord’s Resurrection. Every celebration of Mass commemorates all the Easter Mysteries, the Lord's Supper at which Christ instituted the Eucharist, the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross and His Resurrection, the historic events on which Christianity is based. And each Sunday celebrates the Descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost (fifty days after Easter) which established the Church. Every Sunday, then, is a “little Easter”. Every Sunday is Christ's feast day. This is why the Sundays during Lent are excluded from the forty days of penance; why no saints' feast days on the Church's calendar are celebrated on Sunday; and, likewise, why no funeral Masses may be conducted on the Lord's Day. All Catholics are seriously obliged to participate in the Church's celebration of Mass on Sundays. Octave of Easter and Paschal Tide The celebration of the feast of Easter, like that of all great feasts of the Church, continues for eight days, or an octave. During the week following Easter Sunday various post-resurrection appearances of Christ are celebrated in the liturgy. The Octave ends on the first Sunday after Easter, which is known as Low Sunday. This name is apparently intended to convey the contrast between this day and the great Easter festival which preceded it, as well as to indicate that, as the Octave Day, it is part of the Easter feast but in a lower degree. This Sunday is also known as "Dominica in albis depositis," in reference to the fact that those who had been baptized on Easter Eve laid aside their white baptismal robes for the first time on this day. The time from the end of the Octave of Easter to the eighth day after Pentecost is called Paschal Tide. The two great feasts celebrated during this time are Ascension and Pentecost. Feast of the Ascension The feast of the Ascension is celebrated on the fortieth day after Easter Sunday, commemorating the Ascension of Christ into Heaven and His completion of the work of our redemption. The liturgy on this day celebrates the entry of Christ into heaven with our human nature glorified, and the pledge of our glorification with Him. In the past processions outside the church were held on this day to imitate Christ's leading the Apostles out of the city to the Mount of Olives, and to commemorate the entry of Christ into heaven. After the Gospel on this day the Paschal Candle is extinguished. Pentecost Pentecost, from the Greek word for ‘fiftieth’, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles fifty days after the Resurrection. It is also called Whitsunday. This feast is very ancient, dating back to the first century. The Vespers Hymn for this feast is the Veni, Creator Spiritus ‘Come, Creator Spirit’ and the sequence for the Mass is the Veni sancte Spiritus “Come, Holy Spirit”. Red vestments are worn to commemorate the love of the Holy Spirit, or to represent the tongues of fire. Throughout the Easter Season, the Regina Coeli/Queen of Heaven” is said as the mealtime Angelus prayer. Fr. Paulino Mondo
